Argonaut, the student association of the Antwerp Maritime Academy.
The Argonaut Gala Evening is the social event of the year for the Belgian maritime world. Each year again we welcome maritime related companies together with lots of future, current and ex-seafarers. Foreign students also find their way to this magnificent event and even people not related to maritime education are welcome to our special and well-known evening.
The Gala Evening is organised by the praesidium of Argonaut with the support of our sponsors and the maritime academy.
This year we donate a part of our winnings, to the organization vzw Save Askoy II, for the rebuilding of the Askoy II
In 1959 it was built in Antwerp, ordered by Hugo van Kuyk, a well-known architect.
In the sixties the ship in the book ‘The Proper Yacht’ described as one of the most peculiar ship’s in the world.
Later on the Askoy II was bought by Jacques Brel who sailed it to the Marquesas Islands.
After a heavy storm the ship was stranded in 1994 on the beaches of New Zealand.
The VZW Save Askoy II is working to restore this piece of Belgian Heritage, and we with Argonaut are proud to help with that by our donation.
